What is a Vermont adventure elopement?
Back in the day, an elopement was certainly far from the traditional wedding celebration, often considered a bit scandalous or for couples that wanted to tie the knot in secret. Today, an elopement wedding celebration can be whatever you desire and, in a modern world where large gatherings may no longer be the norm, an adventure elopement is an intentional – but small – celebration uniquely crafted to each individual couple. It’s a day that is all about the two of you and the new traditions that are most meaningful in your celebration of each other.
To elope in Vermont, one of New England’s most divine mountainous playgrounds, is an adventure in itself. Whether at the top of Killington peak, or on the beachfront of Lake Champlain, these are some of the best places to elope in Vermont.
1. The Lodge at Spruce Peak | Stowe, Vermont
Central to The Village at Stowe mountain is The Lodge at Spruce Peak, Stowe’s only ski-in, ski-out luxury resort. Though you may be dreaming of a snowy winter ski elopement, the lodge is also open year-round and the Stowe Gondola Skyride operates from July through October so you can get that epic top-of-mountain view. Maybe choose to rent some golf carts and elope in style on the mountain golf course overlooking the mountain peaks and then make your way down to the WhistlePig Pavilion to dance under the starry night sky on your elopement night.
2. Waterbury Reservoir | Waterbury, Vermont
The Waterbury Reservoir is the ninth largest body of water in the state of Vermont, according to the Vermont State Park website, and “was created in the 1930’s by the CCC as a flood control project to protect towns and villages along the Winooski River Valley”. The state park is only open seasonally in the warmer months, and is a great spot for fishers, boaters, swimmers, and picnics. Not to mention one of the most beautiful spots in Vermont to watch the sun set behind the mountains in the summer.
3. Killington Mountain | Killington, Vermont
Killington Ski Resort is another favorite mountaintop spot to elope in Vermont. Turn your elopement celebration into a ski weekend and lay low at the Killington Grand Resort Hotel with an elaborate dinner and dining for two. Or spend a summer weekend biking and hiking the trails of the mountain with a champagne toast at the top!
4. Shelburne Farms | Shelburne, Vermont
Shelburne Farms is one of my go-to locations for all types of photography sessions – from elopements, weddings, couples, families and more. This is because Shelburne Farms is like multiple locations in one and with the perfect backdrop and activities for a Vermont elopement. The acres upon acres of land not only host the farm itself, but also the historic Inn at Shelburne Farms which is nestled right behind the Lake Champlain shoreline. You can also walk the paths under great golden maple trees in the autumn, and even spot the tip of Camel’s Hump from afar – this has got to be one of the best places to elope in Vermont!
5. Trapp Family Lodge | Stowe, Vermont
Another favorite for epic Vermont mountain views is from the hills of the Trapp Family Lodge, where cross-country skiers come from across New England for some of the state’s best trails. And don’t forget to grab a beer at the Von Trapp Brewery to celebrate your vows after your elopement celebration!
6. Ethan Allen Park | Burlington, Vermont
The Ethan Allen Park in the New North End of Burlington is a hidden gem for small celebrations. After a short walk through the woods, the peak of the park overlooks Burlington and Lake Champlain, giving stunning views for an elopement celebration.
7. Sterling Pond Trail | Stowe, Vermont
For couples who love hiking together, the Sterling Pond trail is a quick, though moderately steep, 1.5-mile hike to the pond. You’ll get Tahoe California vibes from the tall pine trees and crystal-clear water at the peak. And here’s a fun fact for you – Sterling Pond is where I got engaged so it holds a special place in my heart! It is truly such a gorgeous spot to elope in Vermont.
8. Leddy Beach | Burlington, Vermont
Leddy Beach is another magical Vermont elopement location. The summers in Vermont are often so fleeting, yet so magical, and this Lake Champlain beachside park is where I spent summer nights watching the sun set. Imagine your summer elopement at dusk on the shores of the lake – maybe even grab a paddleboard and the pup – for an enchanting night that slips away with the sun.
You deserve an experience, not just a wedding.
There’s no one-size fits all for elopements, and that’s what makes them so special. Whether it’s a day with just the two of you, or your 10 closest friends and family members, your elopement celebration is a day just for you. Now that you know some of the best places to elope in Vermont, it’s time to make this dream a reality!
