New England Photographer

Hey, I’m Amelia!

I’m an adventure elopement photographer and a New England native with the expertise to help you plan an elopement that feels downright dreamy – sweeping coastal views, heartfelt vows, and a serene experience in nature.

I bring to the table a deep love of the outdoors and tons of local knowledge that I gained through a childhood spent exploring off-the-beaten-path areas all over New England. Growing up in Vermont, I spent much of my time hiking, exploring, and photographing — experiences that shaped my love for documenting couples in beautiful outdoor settings.

I’d love to guide you through every step of planning a joyful New England elopement day – and a once-in-a-lifetime experience that doesn’t look quite like anyone else’s.

If you were eloping in the 18th or 19th century, perhaps this meant sneaking off to get married in secret, usually without a ton of planning – but in recent years, the definition has expanded into something completely different. Today, a New England elopement can look like whatever you want – a thrill-seeking adventure, an easygoing day on the beach, or a stroll through the forest.

What is a New England Elopement?

A New England elopement has 30 guests or less (and often, no guests at all). Even if you’re inviting guests to your celebration, the timeline for most New England elopements is focused on you and your partner, and having unrushed, intentional time together.

A New England microwedding has between 30 and 50 guests. It might mix elements of a traditional wedding and an elopement. For example, your New England microwedding could include a private adventure and vow exchange, followed by a more traditional ceremony and reception.

A traditional New England wedding has more than 50 guests. Traditional weddings usually follow a “standard” timeline of getting ready, a first look, ceremony, and reception – and often involve more coordination and planning than a smaller celebration.

As the definition of an elopement has changed, the line between an elopement and a wedding has gotten a little more blurry. Other New England elopement photographers might have their own definitions, but from my perspective, here’s where I find the difference:

What’s the difference between an elopement, a microwedding, and a traditional wedding?

New England has four distinct seasons – temperate summers, crisp autumns, snowy winters, and colorful springs. One of the things I love most about New England is the endless opportunities for adventures in nature year-round.

You can elope in New England during all four seasons.

Why Elope in New England?

Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine… each state in New England has different landscapes and appeals for your adventurous elopement day. Maybe you don’t have a specific state in mind yet for your New England elopement yet, but that’s totally fine – I’ve got some amazing locations below to kickstart your daydreaming.

New England’s states offer a ton of variety for elopements.

I firmly believe there’s no one-size-fits-all definition of an adventurous elopement. For some couples, a perfect New England elopement day might look like an all-day hike to a panoramic vista. For others, it might be a relaxing picnic on the coast. There are so many places you can elope in New England, from the easily accessible to the adventurous. (And I can help you find the spot that’s perfect for you.)

New England has amazing places to elope, no matter your desired level of adventure.

Where to Elope in New England

Upstate New York offers rustic charm in the Adirondack and Catskill Mountains, and serene beauty in areas like Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley. If a mountain lodge, a local winery, or a hike through the fall colors sounds like your vibe, consider upstate New York for your New England elopement.

How to choose the perfect location for your

Here are a few things to consider when choosing your New England elopement location:

If you’re overwhelmed by the possibilities for where you could elope in New England, it might help to start by narrowing them down based on your unique vision and priorities.

And if you’re not sure how to find a spot that matches all your priorities, that’s where I come in, with local expertise and even more off-the-beaten-path location suggestions.

Are you comfortable exploring a coastal town in your wedding attire with the possibility of some onlookers, or would you prefer total privacy on your elopement day? Considering this question can help you choose between an urban adventure or one in nature, or a national park with more visitors versus the quiet of a more hidden spot.

What’s your tolerance for crowds?

Are you looking for a spot that’s more accessible (for you and/or your guests), or are you willing to hike several miles into the backcountry? If there’s a mismatch between you and your guests, a private hike followed by a more accessible ceremony might be the perfect balance – but you’ll need to choose a location where you can do both.

How active would you like to be on your elopement day?

When you picture exchanging vows with your partner, where do you see yourself? Is your ideal backdrop mountains, coastline, forest… or a mix of all three? Some areas in New England are more suited than others for green forests, stunning coastline, or rocky mountains.

What kind of scenery do you want as your elopement backdrop?

Depending on the season of your elopement, some locations in New England will be a better fit than others. If you’re picturing fall colors, for example, you’ll want to choose a forest with bright changing leaves. And if you’re leaning towards a summer elopement, but you want privacy for your ceremony, you may want to avoid coastal locations that are busiest during the summer.

When do you want to elope?

Spring has the least predictable weather of any season in New England – but if you’re willing to brave some potentially chilly, rainy conditions, you’ll be rewarded by green landscapes and fewer visitors at popular spots than in summer or fall.

Spring New England elopements

Summer is the best time for a New England elopement if you want to adventure outdoors – with longer daylight hours and beautiful sunny days – and it’s perfect for taking a dip in a lake or at the beach. New England summers are lush and green, with colorful wildflowers and temperate weather in the mountains.

However, summer is also the busiest season at many of the most popular beaches and coastal towns in New England – which is important to keep in mind if privacy is your priority on your elopement day.

Summer New England elopements

New England is known for its incredible fall colors and, depending on where in New England you choose to elope, you can expect peak colors between September and October. The changing leaves are a stunning backdrop for a colorful, serene elopement day.

Fall is also the busiest time of year for tourism in popular leaf-peeping towns like Stowe and Woodstock – so keep in mind that there may be more traffic and less privacy, especially on the weekends. Weekdays are a great alternative for a private New England elopement among the fall colors.

Fall New England elopements

New England gets a lot of snowfall in winter, which is ideal if you want to cozy up in a mountain lodge or ski down a mountain on your elopement day. Winter is also the “off-season” for a lot of the most popular elopement locations in New England, so you can expect less crowds.

Winter New England elopements

The two biggest considerations for deciding what time of day to elope in New England are lighting and crowds.

Sunrise and sunset are the most popular times for New England elopement ceremonies – golden hour lighting is stunning on the beaches and mountains – but sunrise is better for a peaceful, serene experience with less crowds.

When planning your New England elopement timeline, you’ll want to keep in mind which locations will get busiest around midday, and when the lighting will be best in each spot.

This is where I come in as your elopement planning guide to help build a timeline that fits your priorities and allows for flexibility, so you can be completely present on your elopement day.

What’s the best time of day for a New England elopement?

As a New England elopement photographer, I’ve documented beautiful elopement days all over the region in stunning, off-the-beaten path locations that you’d never experience anywhere else on the East Coast. I help couples formulate a timeline that takes all of these factors into account and ensures you have a joyful, relaxed elopement experience.

Another major aspect of planning your New England elopement is deciding when to elope. Personally, I don’t think there’s a wrong time to elope in New England – but the best time for your elopement depends what kind of celebration you’re dreaming of.

The Best Time to Elope in New England

How to Legally Elope in New England

What may be one of the least exciting (but important) parts of planning your New England elopement is figuring out the paperwork and logistics of legally tying the knot.

Depending on which state you elope in, the rules for how to obtain a marriage license will vary a bit. But in general, you’ll want to find the county clerk’s office for the county you’re eloping in. Sometimes counties require an appointment to get a marriage license, so make sure you look this up in advance.

Also consider that if you’re traveling from far away for your New England elopement, it’s important to plan enough extra time to stop by city hall and pick up your license before your elopement day – usually both partners have to appear together in person.

Fortunately, most counties in New England allow non-residents to apply for a marriage license – just make sure to double-check by calling or checking online.

The requirements for officiants and witnesses vary by state:

What Does a New England Elopement Cost?

Technically, a New England elopement can be as affordable as the cost of a marriage license. But if you’re dreaming of an adventurous celebration with artistic, beautiful photos to document your experience, there are a few budget considerations to keep in mind.

How much you choose to spend on each of these categories will depend on your priorities and vision for your dream elopement day – but here are some of the items to factor into your New England elopement costs.

Every couple’s New England elopement is different – and so is the way they choose to celebrate. If a casual meal at a brewery with your partner after a hike in the mountains sounds like your vibe, perfect. Or if your elopement involves guests, you may want to consider the cost of a catered dinner or reception for your friends and family. And even if it’s just the two of you, there’s no better day than your elopement to splurge on a fancy meal.

Food & Celebration

This is an area where there’s a ton of flexibility in how much you spend on your New England elopement – and ranges anywhere from a thrifted suit to a designer dress.

Some couples have had great luck with inexpensive wedding attire, so there’s no need to overspend in this category if you don’t want to. But this can also be a place to go all out on an outfit that makes you feel your absolute best.

Attire

sample elopement budget

Depending on where you choose to elope in New England, you may need a permit for your elopement ceremony. Fortunately, for most public lands (like national or state parks), these permits are less than $200, but need to be reserved well in advance of your elopement date. You may also need to consider park entrance fees if you’re inviting guests along on your day.

Permits

Whether you’re driving or flying, you’ll want to factor in the cost of plane tickets, gas, and rental cars. You’ll also want to consider the cost of lodging near your elopement location – and I’d recommend arriving a day or two in advance to get settled in.

Travel & Lodging

As a New England elopement photographer and planning guide, I’ll assist you through the process of crafting an elopement experience that feels like an epic celebration of your love.

New England elopement packages include assistance with finding the perfect locations, planning unique and fun activities, creating a timeline for your day, and even officiating your elopement ceremony.

Depending on where in New England you want to elope, packages start at $5,200 for 4 hours of photography coverage.

Advice for Planning Your New England Elopement

Sorting out the logistics of your New England elopement day may not be the most exciting part of planning, but it’s definitely important. Here are a few areas you don’t want to leave to the last second.

If you’re eloping in a national or state park in New England, you’ll likely need a permit for your elopement ceremony. The requirements for each location are different, but often these permits are available to reserve 6 to 12 months in advance, and depending on the location, can be snapped up quickly.

But there’s no need to stress – I’ll help you figure out the requirements for your elopement location and how to secure any needed permits well in advance.

New England elopement logistics

Once you have your New England elopement destination chosen, one of the first logistics to sort is travel. You’ll need to decide if you’re driving or flying, reserve tickets, and book a rental car.

You’ll also need to reserve lodging for your elopement. I recommend choosing lodging close to your elopement location, and consider whether you will be open to hosting other guests, or if you prefer to keep it quiet and low-key with just the two of you. If you’re planning on booking an Airbnb, I highly suggest reading up on the rules and logistics of booking an Airbnb as your elopement venue. I also recommend arriving a day or two in advance to get settled in and pick up your marriage license.

Travel

New England’s weather can be unpredictable, especially in the winter and early spring – but there are several things you can do to prepare.

  • Look up average temps and weather conditions for your elopement location in advance
  • Prepare adequately – pack warm and waterproof layers if chilly weather is a possibility
  • Make a backup plan in case you have to pivot due to weather

When you bring me on board to help plan and photograph your New England elopement, I’ll make sure all these logistics are sorted – so when your elopement day arrives, you can just focus on being present and enjoying all the beautiful nature around you.

Quaint countryside elopement in

First, if you’ve made the leap and decided to elope – congratulations! There are so many beautiful possibilities for your elopement day. One of the first decisions that couples make is deciding where they would like to get married (and it’s a big decision!). With over 10 years of elopement photography and planning experience, I help guide my couples through the process of finding the perfect location that speaks to them.

One of the first things I provide is my Location Scouting Questionnaire, which includes personalized questions and recommendations about what is most important to you on your elopement day. Do you love hiking in the mountains or is an easygoing, calm day on the beach more your scene? From this questionnaire, I’ll send custom location recommendations for your elopement day so that you can enjoy the most beautiful, experience-centered celebration together.

What does a typical elopement day look like?

One of my favorite things about elopements is that there is no such thing as a “typical” elopement day. Each celebration is shaped and crafted to feel deeply personal, joyful, and entirely centered on the two of you. As my couples begin envisioning their elopement, I often ask a simple question: What does your perfect day together look like? Here are a few ideas to reflect on as you begin imagining the possibilities:

  • What activities do you two love to do together?
  • Do you enjoy being in nature or prefer a more urban setting?
  • Do you envision including any guests or family members? What about pets?

The best part is – there’s no right answer! I work with couples to build their dream elopement day that is unique, experience-centered, and absolutely so much fun.

I’ve worked with couples who plan their elopement day in as little as a few weeks, while others book up to a year or more in advance. In my experience of helping couples plan their elopement day, a beautiful, no-frills day centered around just the two of you takes less time to plan than a more intricate day that involves booking other vendors that book up in advance (florals, music, hair/makeup etc.) or hosting a reception or dinner with guests. If you’ve been to a more traditional wedding, you may have a preconceived idea of what a wedding ceremony might look like. Again, I’m here to tell you that there is no “right” way to plan your elopement ceremony. Some couples choose to read hand-written notes or vows to each other privately, while others like to include a family member or friend to officiate and share the moment with their loved ones. Did I also mention that I’m an ordained officiant and can officiate your elopement? However you’d like to celebrate, the choice is yours.

Depending on the state you’re getting married in, there may be different legal requirements. If you are planning on eloping in Vermont, you simply need an officiant to sign your marriage license (you don’t even need any witnesses!). Generally, you will need to contact the town clerk’s office to obtain a marriage license and ask if there are any additional requirements. A marriage license cannot be issued through the mail, and you cannot be married by a proxy. You can download a copy of the marriage license application and have it ready for the town clerk before you arrive at their office.

Absolutely! For some couples, their dream elopement day is just about the two of them adventuring and celebrating together. I encourage couples to think about how they love to spend time together – do you enjoy campfires and stargazing? Or reading on the beach? Perhaps a bike ride through the city?
