If you were eloping in the 18th or 19th century, perhaps this meant sneaking off to get married in secret, usually without a ton of planning – but in recent years, the definition has expanded into something completely different. Today, a New England elopement can look like whatever you want – a thrill-seeking adventure, an easygoing day on the beach, or a stroll through the forest.
What is a New England Elopement?
A New England elopement has 30 guests or less (and often, no guests at all). Even if you’re inviting guests to your celebration, the timeline for most New England elopements is focused on you and your partner, and having unrushed, intentional time together.
A New England microwedding has between 30 and 50 guests. It might mix elements of a traditional wedding and an elopement. For example, your New England microwedding could include a private adventure and vow exchange, followed by a more traditional ceremony and reception.
A traditional New England wedding has more than 50 guests. Traditional weddings usually follow a “standard” timeline of getting ready, a first look, ceremony, and reception – and often involve more coordination and planning than a smaller celebration.

As the definition of an elopement has changed, the line between an elopement and a wedding has gotten a little more blurry. Other New England elopement photographers might have their own definitions, but from my perspective, here’s where I find the difference:

Here are a few things to consider when choosing your New England elopement location:

If there’s a mismatch between you and your guests, a private hike followed by a more accessible ceremony might be the perfect balance – but you’ll need to choose a location where you can do both.

When you picture exchanging vows with your partner, where do you see yourself? Is your ideal backdrop mountains, coastline, forest… or a mix of all three? Some areas in New England are more suited than others for green forests, stunning coastline, or rocky mountains.
What kind of scenery do you want as your elopement backdrop?
Depending on the season of your elopement, some locations in New England will be a better fit than others. If you’re picturing fall colors, for example, you’ll want to choose a forest with bright changing leaves. And if you’re leaning towards a summer elopement, but you want privacy for your ceremony, you may want to avoid coastal locations that are busiest during the summer.

Spring has the least predictable weather of any season in New England – but if you’re willing to brave some potentially chilly, rainy conditions, you’ll be rewarded by green landscapes and fewer visitors at popular spots than in summer or fall.

New England summers are lush and green, with colorful wildflowers and temperate weather in the mountains.
However, summer is also the busiest season at many of the most popular beaches and coastal towns in New England – which is important to keep in mind if privacy is your priority on your elopement day.

Fall is also the busiest time of year for tourism in popular leaf-peeping towns like Stowe and Woodstock – so keep in mind that there may be more traffic and less privacy, especially on the weekends. Weekdays are a great alternative for a private New England elopement among the fall colors.

New England gets a lot of snowfall in winter, which is ideal if you want to cozy up in a mountain lodge or ski down a mountain on your elopement day. Winter is also the “off-season” for a lot of the most popular elopement locations in New England, so you can expect less crowds.

Sunrise and sunset are the most popular times for New England elopement ceremonies – golden hour lighting is stunning on the beaches and mountains – but sunrise is better for a peaceful, serene experience with less crowds.
When planning your New England elopement timeline, you’ll want to keep in mind which locations will get busiest around midday, and when the lighting will be best in each spot.

How to Legally Elope in New England
What may be one of the least exciting (but important) parts of planning your New England elopement is figuring out the paperwork and logistics of legally tying the knot.
Depending on which state you elope in, the rules for how to obtain a marriage license will vary a bit. But in general, you’ll want to find the county clerk’s office for the county you’re eloping in. Sometimes counties require an appointment to get a marriage license, so make sure you look this up in advance.
Also consider that if you’re traveling from far away for your New England elopement, it’s important to plan enough extra time to stop by city hall and pick up your license before your elopement day – usually both partners have to appear together in person.
Fortunately, most counties in New England allow non-residents to apply for a marriage license – just make sure to double-check by calling or checking online.

How much you choose to spend on each of these categories will depend on your priorities and vision for your dream elopement day – but here are some of the items to factor into your New England elopement costs.

But there’s no need to stress – I’ll help you figure out the requirements for your elopement location and how to secure any needed permits well in advance.
